How to Incorporate Fear Free into Your Travel Plans

Most everyone who has pets has the need or desire to travel sometimes. Bringing your pet with you when you are planning a vacation is always the best option. (They want in on the fun too!) But what if your pet can’t come with you during your travel plans?

Having a known friend or family member come to your home is the best and most Fear Free option for your pets. When this is not possible, having your pets stay with a known friend or family member in their home is another great alternative. If neither of these options is available, staying at a trusted boarding facility (hopefully one with Fear Free trained staff!) is another option to consider.

The Impact of Stress on Your Pet During Travel

Staying in an unknown place or a loud, busy boarding facility may cause unnecessary Fear, Stress, and Anxiety (FAS). Prolonged exposure to stress can raise your pet’s cortisol levels, which can lead to health issues.

Choosing a Fear Free Pet Sitter

When selecting a pet sitter, consider these Fear Free principles:

  • Look for a Fear Free Certified Professional. These professionals understand how to recognize, prevent, and manage in pets.

  • Vet your pet sitters! Ask about their experience in identifying FAS, the tools they may use during their stay, and how they would handle stressful situations.

  • Arrange a meet and greet before your trip. If your pet is nervous around new people, schedule multiple visits for the sitter to spend some time with your pets and walk the sitter through your pet’s daily routines to help the pet adjust.

Preparing for a Stress-Free Pet Sitting Experience

To ensure your pet has a Fear Free experience while you're away:

  • Provide all essential details, including feeding schedules, medications, favorite treats and toys, likes and dislikes, emergency contacts, and vet information.

  • Clearly outline your pet’s daily routine to minimize stress and keep them comfortable.
